When Mendel's work went public

his revolutionary account of inheritance in 1865, his work remained almost unknown until the beginning of the last century. A pioneer in this turnaround was William Bateson, a Cambridge botanist, who had come across the paper and was impressed by the implications of its contents. Spurred by a meeting on plant hybridisation and breeding backed by Britain's Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in 18...

The Mendelian Revolution. The Emergence of Hereditarian Concepts in Modern Science and Society

Both historians and scientists campaign under the banner of objectivity in the academic search for truths. Their paths seldom cross-historians look back, scientists look in-but, in recent years, historians of science have begun to make quite a stir, questioning whether the scientific claim to objectivity has a basis in historical reality. Peter J. Bowler operates from such a premise in this sho...

The tetrad-pollen model fails to explain the bias in Mendel's pea (Pisum sativum) experiments.

For >40 years, geneticists and science historians have appealed to the tetrad-pollen model as an explanation of the bias toward expectation in Mendel's data, albeit without experimental support. Our experiments demonstrate that pollen sampling during self-pollination in pea conforms to the binomial distribution with no evidence of a tetrad-pollen effect.

The two lectures were published in Volume IV of the Verhandlungen des Naturforschenden Vereins in Briinn and we shall refer to them as 'Transactions' (1866). It is well known that only thirty-four years ...

Problems of Heredity as a Subject for Horticultural Investigation

Mendel's work from 1865 was largely neglected, until 1900 when it was simultaneously rediscovered by Hugo de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erik von Tschermak. When Mendel's work came to the attention of William Bateson (who himself had already been advocating controlled crosses as an approach to studying heredity), he was convinced that Mendel's work was of major importance: That we are in the prese...
